My latest blog post ‘Learning to Sketch’ includes @davegray’s tip for neater writing: http://prlloyd.com/e/249 /cc @rlfalerts @PeteWilliams
Taking a break from Twitter.
@markgosling @insom The trick is to slightly slant the vertical strokes to the right, horizontal strokes slightly upwards. Works great!
@abitgone That, and having to always change the batteries. I much prefer a wired to wireless, although I do miss the weight of the later.
zenbullets If you’ve bought an iPad this week, please speak up, we’d all LOVE to hear about it.
@aegirthor Great idea! I wonder why this is not the default on cameras?
Enjoying the first day of @clearleft’s sketching workshop with @davegray. Learnt a nice little trick to make my writing neater too :-)
@aegirthor Agreed. Market Cap is a bogus figure. It’s reminds of when I’ve been offered shares as payment for projects—no, cash please!
smileyj68 Wish I could find a better (read: current) Mac twitter client - but who in their right mind would develop one now?
Videos of Secretary Geithner speaking with Chancellor Osbourne reminds me of Junior Apprentice.
@mdo Does using a dedicated reply link/option change any of this though?
@nicepaul I’ve wondered that too—I lost track of the behaviour given it changed so much. Add it to my growing list of Twitter annoyances.
@mdo But who said it needed to be open; the users, or advertisers? Therein lies my problem with Facebook.
@Si Because Tweetie for Mac is abandonware.
@Si Mission: Accomplished!
Plenty of people lining themselves up as fatalities prior to my blogging I see! /cc @anna_debenham @aajhiggs @Si @cole007
@allmarkedup Almost the opposite to the Comedy site in that it’s over designed. Lots of features, perhaps unnecessary, but we’ll see.
I’m sorry, but you driven me to it @bbccouk: @paulrobertlloyd/on-notice
jstewart @paulrobertlloyd Agreed, this new BBC visual language is a good idea on paper but just seems to be hampering their designs
The iPlayer is the exception to this rule. It’s plain to see where the BBC’s website budget is going—rather disproportionally as I see it.
Re the BBC, I’m surprised more people aren’t as horrified as I am by the—let’s face it—utter crap they’ve been churning out recently.
@Si The iPlayer has issues, but visual design isn’t one of them.
Looks like I’ll be writing a blog post tonight. But first, I need some fatalities…
Once again, finding myself commenting on @bbccouk about the corporation’s continued disregard for quality design: http://prlloyd.com/x/29
@gaznet Yes, but that’s the problem. You can clearly see where all the money is being invested—certainly not on other parts of the site.
I had so much hope for GVL3, but it turns out this was false hope. Large fonts, no subtly, continued indecision over Helvetica vs Verdana.
Getting rather upset by how every part of the BBC website is being redesigned, poorly. First Doctor Who, now Comedy: http://bbc.co.uk/comedy
@gnaihc Well, they’re certainly a damn site better than those for Office 2010 on Windows: http://blog.cocoia.com/2…
@RubberPenguin I actively avoid any form of social interaction whenever possible, so I feel your pain!
Won the war of attrition between me and another viewer of this flat. Now just need the agent to arrive so I can see if it was worth the wait
@Si To you, maybe ;-)
tdallaway RT via @Glinner & @mobbsy: £145.50pa gets you the whole BBC’s output; TV, web, radio, iPlayer etc. £102pa gets you The Times
@Si Shouldn’t be, I used the retweet button on Tweetie 3.0.
smileyj68 Hadn’t noticed Twitter is banning in-stream ads. Must suck to develop for Twitter and not be @lorenb.
jasonfried With every call being recorded for quality assurance purposes you’d think call center quality would be improving.
@aegirthor Ooh, not you too!? This obsession with ‘that’ pointless luxury item is getting rather tedious.
@Hicksdesign Have you seen http://notableapp.com? It’s more for reviewing live sites, but I’m sure it could be adapted to suit your needs.
Looking forward to the day @facebook becomes the new IM, i.e. irrelevant, a passing trend: http://prlloyd.com/x/28
Looks like @37signals missed a translation in Basecamp: http://img.ly/1jYP
@gaznet Oh, I was talking more about my newly expanded collection of featured badges.
@RubberPenguin I’m usually a big fan of anything Ricky Gervais does, but his live show was disappointing and this does feel a bit cheap.
Secretly hoping @aajhiggs takes me with him next time he goes travelling: http://preview.andyhiggs…
@aajhiggs Inevitable feedback email sent :-)
@gaznet In what way?
A page on the web that is now far more pleasing to look at: http://gowalla.com/users…
I remember there being an interesting article about how such photos have new meaning in the New York Times. Will try and digg it out later.
Bruce Davidon’s ‘Subway’ series of photos (1980) are really striking, though the subjects become secondary if the WTC is in the background.
@aegirthor Is it a ‘that’ thing?
Going @gowalla — at Victoria Station http://gowal.la/c/N7Zw
@yannikbloscheck Thanks! Investigating now…
Watching Episode 2 of Junior Apprentice. Turns out the pesky little kids came to Brighton and stood outside the @Clearleft offices!
Wow! I think it will take a few viewings to fully understand the finale of #ashes, but it seemed like a fitting end.
The Hanger, the Coat and the Wardrobe. #lesserbooks
@aegirthor I guess so. It’ll be the only way I’ll get one, as I still refuse to spend money on such a needless luxury!
@abitgone Should I unfollow you then?;-)
@aajhiggs Yet it’s five million times more evil. How about that!
It’s a good news day. Rushed to get to #uxlondon thinking it started at 9am, but arrived half an hour early.
@jvbates Mine gets in at 8.48, so probably just behind yours. Meet at the usual place?
@jvbates What train are you on/getting?
Noting with interest that the next version of @happeningiphone contains more evil. /cc @nikf
I’ll no longer have internet access from Tuesday, and the only light that works in my room has just blown. Welcome to the Dark Ages.
@mdo What did you do?
@alliecreative Oh, you’ve brought back some horrible memories, when I needed to do something similar. I don’t envy you!
I’ve only watched a minute of Junior Apprentice, and I’m already freaked out.
@aegirthor What is a IR35 (and more importantly, shouldn’t I already know)?
@mdo It’s making the assumption that where my mouse pointer lies is where I wish to click. Don’t use website that often, but when I do, lots
@mdo Also, Tweetie for Mac? News? @twitter/@atebits haven’t even had the courtesy to give any indication about its future.
@mdo I understand the argument, but you have reached the top of a slippery slope.
@mdo Of course the interactions are problematic!Hover should only provide affordance, not initiate an action. It’s DAMN annoying!
@mdo …and so it begins.
@aegirthor Quick scan of the coalition document shows some promise. How many of these policies will reach the debating chamber however…
@mdo …and as for the f**king hovercards?
@Si I return to a previous tweet when I say acquisitions = compromised product design.
behoff This is what the new Twitter for iPhone icon should have been - http://drbl.in/21376
http://kickstarter.com + personal projects = lots of exciting ideas buzzing around in my head.
There’s no other way to describe http://joyent.com other than exquisite. Extremely envious of the talented @mezzoblue and @glass right now.
@abitgone That URL makes me cringe, if only for the fact it contains three separate references to government.
Wondering if I’ve just missed the opportunity of a lifetime.
@ryanhavoc That’s not new! That was introduced in Tweetie 2.0.
Thinking I need a holiday.
@KrisBenbow Good job!
@jvbates I’m behind you!
@allmarkedup I do believe @andyhume is a certified genius! Pixel perfection!
@anna_debenham You know what you need to do soldier! Best of luck! ;-)
@stuup I doubt you’ve missed anything ;-)
@Si @shuckle Thanks! I’m a little annoyed by the mix of colour/b&w photos we currently have—hope to fix that before the full site launch.
@andyhume Indeed—I won’t be happy to until I see an accurately reproduced astroid belt ;-)
One for @adactio and @andyhume I think: http://neography.com/exp… via/ @simplebits
Twitter still can’t remember my login, yet it can annoy me every time I hover over a link. /cc @mdo
I love @zenbullets writing, and this post pretty much reflects my own thoughts about Gordon Brown: http://zenbullets.com/bl…
@nicepaul Sure. But your name will be added to a list!
I guess it’s easy to be morally bankrupt when you exist in a culture that encourages profit over ethics.
Facebook has always been a morally bankrupt company, now finally this reality is being exposed.
I remain unconvinced that tomato ketchup is best stored in the fridge rather than a cupboard.
@RubberPenguin If you do, I want pictures!
@markgosling He he, I said the same thing. I usually save every second minute, but forgot to this time.
Thank-you Fireworks for losing the last half-hours worth of work. #adobefail
@kolber A ‘more positive light’ is to not to say I love it (far from it), just that I’m able to tolerate more than I was last week!
A good nights sleep means I’m seeing Trebuchet in a more positive light this morning.
Guess who’s just broken their biological clock :-(
@aajhiggs Hmm, not so sure myself. I admire the bravery of the design but the sweeping elements seem over done. Exciting to see though!
@aegirthor I know that feeling all to well.
@nicepaul I’m definetly getting the impression that Leaders are to be avoided. My offer of a tent still stands ;-)
Up all night whipping a design into shape, presented it to happy client this morning, now heading home for a reunion with my pillows.
Pulling an all nighter on a design I’ve begun to despise.
My attention to detail is often a curse.
@karunchandhok Glad to hear you’re okay! Looks like HRT is now making slow but steady progress, so some positives to take away from Monaco.
It should also be noted that Mehdi Hasan is a complete idiot.
Watching last week’s Question Time and disagreeing with most of the audience and panelists, most of whom lack any sense of pragmatism.
Has @jakehumphreyf1 swapped his clipboard for an iPad?
Nelson? #ashes
smileyj68 Looking more and more like ‘Tweetie for Mac is still alive’ was either a lie or prematurely stated. Lame.
My desk a mess, and finish the week with a design that is inconsistent and incomplete. Time to de-stress in the pub I think.
@aajhiggs Oh! Waterstone’s is owned by the HMV Group. This logo makes much more sense. I like it.
@Si By the looks of it, new/updated websites maybe, but no new branding, or consistent site designs. An opportunity lost.
@aajhiggs Is the ‘w’ from Waterstones the ‘m’ from HMV?
philmc I haven’t seen that new ‘We ♥ Apple’ ad by Adobe yet, because I use ClickToFlash.
Seems that I missed @fligtar’s blog post about the new download buttons for Mozilla Add-ons I helped design: http://j.mp/cfnvaq
davewiner Pretty sure Adobe didn’t care about “open markets” until they got locked out of one. http://r2.ly/3pkb
@aajhiggs … and YAGL (Yet Another Goverment Logo).
@nikf Good, just checking ;-)
@nikf Really? Aside from why redesign only a few months after the previous redesign, it hides most of the functionality. Also: still buggy.
Reached that point in the design phase where I don’t like what I’ve spent the last three weeks designing :-(
Great to learn that Adobe loves choice. So when will Macromedia be de-merged from the company?
@jw Released a ‘disco stripe’ maybe, but destroyed the rest of the site with it. I’m starting to have *serious* misgivings about @gowalla.
Here’s a thread on Get Satisfaction: http://gsfn.us/t/11y0p. Can we expect any response from @gowalla HQ?
Users are not happy about the new @gowalla website. Not just in terms of design, but missing, hidden and broken functionality.
Dear @gowalla, get your shit together (short version).
Dear @gowalla, http://gowalla.com/sessi… is missing so can’t sign into help site, and navigation links on the blog are broken, again.
Also, why does each successive design get more conservative, and hide away more features. This is getting ridiculous. /cc @gawalla
Why does @gowalla insist on redesigning it’s website, rather than focus on fixing long standing bugs?
So we now have a ‘Department of Culture, Olympics, Media & Sport’—the departmental naming madness continues. Can’t wait to see the logo :-(
@wolfl A Tory government was a near certainty, so I’m just thankful it’s excesses can be rained in by the LibDems. That’s my hope anyway.
nathanjmassey Obama: Hey is that Dave?, Dave: Yes Mr. President! Obama: Great! Put Nick on please. #iagreewithnick #ge2010
@wolfl Oh dear, I hope not! Can we not all be hopeful and positive for just a little while?
@Si Yes, but he did choose to use WordPress. It’s poor security (and inability to deal with traffic surges) are well known limitations.
@wolfl Oh, on the timing. There is some pride in the quickness of decision, yet I do fear the finer details having been missed.
@wolfl No, just hopeful that coalition government can be proven to work better than majority government.
I agree with Nick
abitgone Clegg: “We are going to form a new government. But more importantly, we are going to form a new kind of government.”
I hope I don’t live to regret that last tweet!
Today Britain demonstrated why it deserves it’s Triple-A rating. Other countries take months to form coalitions. The UK? Just five days.
Today is a great day for proportional representation, if only for one thing: Coalition Government.
Here’s to its success.
@mealybar Oh I understand that. Got confused for a while about the need for the Queen’s consent, but all ministerial positions require this.
Paddy Ashdown: I’ll just give you just a one word statement: ‘Hooray!’
Reporter: Do you want to add to that statement?
@binarytales Ah, of course! They are *her* ministers.
@aegirthor Partiality and spite? I think you’re getting paranoid.
I didn’t know the Queen needed to approve the appointment of Deputy PM—I thought this position wasn’t constitutional?
tom_watson The 1 good thing about Dep Prime Minister Clegg is that he can now honour his pledge to repeal the Digital Economy Act. #deb #deact
abitgone LibDem voters: your vote was not wasted.
Michael Crick is asking some good points regarding LibDems in coalition. No more three way debates on television programmes? By-elections?
@abitgone Sure—I’ll just change the date and the intro ;-)
A new government equals new government departments and equals new logos. Will they form part of a unified identity? http://prlloyd.com/e/230
iamjamesward I think everyone should refer to David Cameron as the “unelected Prime Minister” throughout his term in Number 10.
I hope (and I bet George Osborne secretly hopes) Vince Cable is also posted to the Treasury too. Two minds are better than one.
@nicepaul No, I’m just being lazy. Only just got myself something to eat!
I see that as part of this new Tory regime, the BBC is systematically making its website look like a bag of balls.
abitgone Right, Davo, job one: sort number10.gov.uk out. It’s horrible. Give Barack a call, his web developers have done a cracking job on his site.
@abitgone I’m really happy for him. I like Gordon Brown, it’s just a shame he was such a useless Prime Minister.
However, in his place: Andy Coulson. Hopefully he’ll soon find himself in the dock regarding News of the World wire tapping (doubtful).
Thankful for one thing tonight: the Dark Lord, Peter Mandelson is no longer in government. Labour would do well to move away from his ilk.
No longer Prime Minister, Gordon Brown looks younger and genuinely happier.
As David Cameron is asked to form a government by the Queen, a rainbow and beautiful sunset is seen over Westminster.
markjames * Gordon_Brown has disconnected (Read error: Connection reset by peers)
Grrrr! I’m about 10 minutes away from a television and missing the big event!
For once I think the collective British public deserves a huge pat on the back; hopfully they’ll like the taste of coalition and grave PR.
@binarytales Probably not, but very rarely do they all sit in session—although I hope this new political climate sees that change too.
Given the current economic climate, a coalition is the very best we could have hoped for, bringing broader electoral support/representation.
@nicepaul Don’t worry, recent events demonstrate that it no longer has any control over the electorate, so now throwing a big tissy. Enjoy!
@binarytales If it’s a full coalition, then LibDems would sit on the same benches as the Tories.
When it comes to property rental, I’m as indecisive as Nick Clegg.
I love the respect (and applause) Tony Benn gets from the protestors on College Green. And rightly so.
@Si Are you going into coalition with @fullcreammilk on a policy of pedantism? /cc @abitgone
Frankly, Labour should take the opportunity to be in opposition as the Tories make cuts—they’ll easily be back in 4 years time.
I’m coming to the opinion that Labour + LibDems != PR. Labour have broken similar promises before, and they’ll break them again.
@abitgone Are you actually working today?
@abitgone Another stella open letter. I need to do something similar I think.
I loved this clip from last weeks HIGNFY, in which Kilroy explains the LibDems coalition dilemma: http://bit.ly/19zy1P
@anna_debenham Wilful disobedience versus delicious cake? I’m so torn; I feel like Nick Clegg right now.
@cole007 Yes. Clearleft’s very own @jvbates for one: http://flic.kr/p/7LRWBS
@anna_debenham I think I need to consider disciplinary procedures for soldiers who have gone AWOL ;-)
gwire Just a gentle reminder: under our traditional system, voters in UK do not directly elect the new Doctor Who.
@cole007 Surely best to get AV, demonstrate coalition government works, and see LibDems ministers to allay the ‘experience’ fear in voters?
@cole007 I’m not sure there is any hope in a Brown-led Rainbow Coalition, with a leadership contest in progress too. Seems far too unstable.
Okay, stake in the ground. I predict a LibCon coalition.
norock It’s wrong of Campbell to tell Adam Boulton what he thinks. Adam gets faxes from News Corp to do that.
@simonbanyard You, like Boulton, seem to be overly emotional. Fair points sure, but the tone of voice isn’t helpful.
@simonbanyard I don’t disagree with you, but you were singling out an individual.
ran 2.2 mi on 9/5/2010 at 6:07 PM with a pace of 11’53”/mi
http://go.nike.com/01tjk…
Welcoming @RubberPenguin to Twitter, AKA Dan Bailey, illustrator extraordinare: http://danbaileyonline.b…
For example, I don’t see Michael Gove threatening Kirsty Wark and the BBC on tonight’s Newsnight.
Best thing about this coalition building? Murdoch is completely locked out.
So Facebook are introducing check-ins? Precisely why @gowalla shouldn’t be integrating it’s service with Facebook (i.e. the ‘open’ graph).
@simonbanyard Not as much as Adam Boulton though, surely? His emotional state and subsequent outburst was incredibly unprofessional.
@abitgone I’m incredibly jealous of your thoughtful and insightful blogging. Great stuff!
